This trinity Celtic knot necklace, as it is mostly commonly know was given that name when the Christians started to get heavily involved with the Celts.  The three sided knot was given the name of the "trinity knot" because each side or each corner represented the Christian Holy Trinity.

The same three corners or three sides apply to the triquettra symbol. The three sides from a Celtic perspective mean past, present and future.  There are other symbols of three that have been assigned to the Triquetra necklace such as Maiden, Mother and Crone or Earth Heaven and Underworld.

As you can see, the Trinity or Triquetra Celtic necklace is rich with symbolism for both the Christian and the Celtic fan.

 

The circle involved with some versions of the Triquetra or Trinity knot are typically meant to be associated with the Christian Trinity symbolism given what the Celtic circle meaning is. It is symbolic of eternal round or eternity. That goes better with the trinity knot necklace.
