Christian Jewelry - Celtic Cross Necklaces

Christian Jewelry

Christian jewelry goes back to the days of the first Christians persecuted under Roman rule. Where many Christians were put to death if caught or at least imprisoned. The nedd arose for Christians to be able to communicate with each other but they needed some sort of sign to identify who was Christian and could be trusted verses the persecutors.
The first specifically Christian symbol was the "Christian Fish" It has great symbolism as a fish is used throughout the New Testament which makes it symbolic but whether that was the reason or if it was easy to draw in the sand or dirt may have had something to do with the choice of symbols.
When Christians were talking to each other they would draw half of a fish with their foot or toe in the dirst or sand. If the other person drew the other half of the fish then they would know they were in friendly company. Nice story but it's two thousand years old so we are forced to take history that old with some degree of question.
For centuries the Christian fish was symbolic of Christianity. As Christianity grew and became up prevailing force in the world scene they started to conquer other people. In that process they adaped pagan symbols attaching a Christian meaning to it. Case in point was the Celtic Triquetra symbol. with its three points it became symbolic of the holy trinity and became used as a Christian symbol.
When the 900 year old Celtic culture was invaded by Christians and forces to convert, the Conquers tried to have them get rid of their pagan symbols. Thankfully they we unsuccessful. The Celts took the standard Chrisitan cross and added a Celtic style circle and placed it on the apex of the cross symbol. A compromise was reached and the Christians adopted the Celtic cross as a Christian symbol. They called it the cross of life. We now refer to it as the Celtic cross. Numerous Christian denominations world wide use the Celtic Cross as their Christian symbol of choice.

The Celtic Cross pendant is widely popular in Christian Jewelry today. The Celtic Cross Necklace is iconic in todays Christian jewelry. The Celtic Trinity knot pendant is also used in Christian jewelry as is the Christian Fish. Many other charms, pendants and necklaces whether they use a cross or biblical symbol or some historical Christian symbol make great Christian jewelry designs.
