Celtic Knot Crosses

Sterling Silver Celtic Knot Crosses

What is the difference between a crosses and Celtic knot crosses? Crosses are symbolically the same as Celtic crosses except that they add to the already great symbolism of the sterling silver crosses. The silver crosses represent all the great Christian virtues and is the major symbol of Christianity.

This represents a traditional sterling silver cross.

The Celtic crosses add much more symbolism that came from the Irish and Celtic cultures. Look for example of how a few of the Irish crosses and Celtic crosses compare to the traditional crosses.

Celtic knot crosses like this example Celtic cross necklace show the present of Celtic knot work. The first thing that separates this Celtic cross from traditional crosses is that it has a Celtic circle around the intersection where the two lines cross each other to make a cross. The Celtic circle means eternity.

Then there is two types of Celtic cross knot work. The knot weave work up and down and sideways on the four arms of the cross. The at the end caps of each line are Celtic trinity knots.

Many Celtic crosses have a Celtic trinity knot on the Celtic cross pendant. The trinity knot is a Celtic knot that has three corners. Each of the three corners are used to equate to the Holy Trinity.

This is another example of Irish Celtic crosses. It has the Celtic circle and the Celtic knot work on the arms of the cross. Celtic knot work, typically represents eternity as well.

Irish Crosses

This is a great example of Irish crosses. One thing to note, the terms "Irish crosses" and "Celtic crosses" for many people including the Irish, are all considered to be the same or just Irish crosses. The Celtics are no longer a surviving culture. However, many of their cultural influences have been incorporated into Irish culture, especially in art and jewelry.

This Irish cross above has an Irish clover in the middle of the cross where the intersection goes. It is used in place of the Celtic circle.

The arms of the cross are a Celtic interlaced knot.

This Irish cross necklace shows a great example of Irish crosses. The Celtic circle is made from a Irish Claddagh symbol. The end caps have a trinity knot. The Irish Claddagh symbol is made up of a pair of hands, a heart and a crown. The Hands stand for friendship. The heart is love and the crown defines loyalty and fidelity.

From these examples if Irish Celtic crosses we can see a sample of the symbolism that is added to the traditional crosses.
