In this modern day mechanized world we live in were cars can eaily go 120 mph and race cars can go hundreds of miles per hour. Even in a day were motors are still measured by horse power I love movies with horses in them. I love westerns old and new if they have a lot of horses in them. I love movies that are not about cowboys as long as they have horses in them. The beautiful majestic horse.
I think this old city boy feel in love with horses in grade school while reading every Black Stallion book I could find in the school library. Probably read them all more than once. That's when I realized I was born in the wrong time and place. Born in a city, away from farms and horses. Movies with horses have always been a great escape for me.
Some of my favorite horse movies are Hildalgo, Man From Snowy River (those wild herds of horses). (no so much Man From Snowy River 2), The Horse Whisperer, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (legendary horse chases), Silverado (The horse kissing scene when rider and horse reunite), Bite the Bullet ( the part about horses, which is the whole movie), City Slickers (the part where I wished I was trading places with the three main characters), Dances With Wolves (showing the reliance on the horse for transportation), Dreamer (love story between a girl and a horse. Bought it for my daughter) and John Waynes early movies where there were a lot of horse stunts and horse chases. Other assorted westerns using horses are also a favorite of mine.
I remember my first rodeo up on the hillside over looking Orem, Utah. Hearing the horses clapping against the soft dirt. I felt sorry for those calves getting tided up but that quickly vanished with more horse events to watch. I moved out to the country with my family starting to grow up and now live by a horse pasture at the end of the street. Every year we see at least one new foal come into the world, sometimes more.
