Partly as fashion dictated and partially for symbolism to the various aspects that different Christian organizations thought were important.

Kings, Queens and Spiritual Leaders worn very ornate decorative cross necklaces to show their stature in society. Warriors, knights, flag bearers and others on the battle field wore them as a good luck charms and symbols of protective faith.

Over the ages and as the process of jewelry making became more refined and with the spread of Christianity the cross necklace became far more popular.

Now we have the Celtic Cross Necklaces which have become widely popular and used by Christians in all sorts of denominations.
