Jewelry has been around since the beginiing of man give or take a few centuries. Of all the possible jewelry, necklaces were the easiest and this the most popular. You could take a vine or a crude piece of rope, a strip of hide (leather) attach something to it and tie it around your neck. Easy to do.
Ancient man came to use necklaces as a status symbol or a statement or power of fear. Depending on the need. For all we know they could have even been used as a fashion statement or courting purposes. They were also uses for spiritual reasons whether Christian or pagan.
 After Christianity became dominate through the western world the symbol of the fish came into play for a several centuries symbolizing Christianity. Then the Cross and Crucifix came into vogue as the main symbol of Christianity.

The cross necklace came into play. Crosses were fashioned originally out of bone or wood or pretty much anything that could be lashed together to form a cross.
Then came the ability to work with metal and after that the working with metal alloys came along. During this time the cross necklace became even more popular and the styles became extremely diverse. Partly as fashion dictated and partially for symbolism to the various aspects that different Christian organizations thought were important.
Kings, Queens and Spiritual Leaders worn very ornate decorative cross necklaces to show their stature in society. Warriors, knights, flag bearers and others on the battle field wore them as a good luck charms and symbols of protective faith.
Over the ages and as the process of jewelry making became more refined and with the spread of Christianity the cross necklace became far more popular.
Now we have the Celtic Cross Necklaces which have become widely popular and used by Christians in all sorts of denominations.
Cross necklaces for men have always been popular but now  the mens cross necklace has taken on a life of its own with many masculine designs available. Dog tag cross necklaces, rugged style cross necklaces and so forth.
