Celtic Trinity Knot Jewellery Symbolism

This thread is all about the symbols used in jewelry design. As the ABOUT ME section of this blog reveals, We have jewelry web sites. We specialize in symbolic and meaningful jewelry. Sterling Silver Jewelry.

It only seemed natural to extend our jewelry tastes and concepts to a blog where we can reach a different audience and exchange ideas about symbolism and meaning. There are some symbols that are standard such as the Cross. However there are many Celtic symbols which stir up a difference of opinions.

This thread should prove interesting as it grows.

We have many different Celtic charms, toe rings, earrings, pendants and rings with different celtic designs. We face the same problem as the scholars who have studied the meanings of Celtic symbols. The early celtics didn't have much of a written language but the used symbols, mostly interwoven lines or geometric designs.

The scholars mostly agree the the symbols meant one thing during one period of time and generations later they meant something different. A symbol that meant one thing 300 years later may have been used in a family crest and then came to be known as a "John O' Doe" knot.

I enjoy reading about celtic symbols and have gotten use to taking everything with a grain of salt.

One of the more commonly accepted theories about the interconnectedness of the lines is that the symbolize elements of eternity interwoven throughout out our lives.

To start with i thought I'd review the Cetic Trinity Knot.
The trinity knot is a basic design with three points that in one fashion or another are interconnected.
Some Trinity symbols are plain and other more ornate such as this one on the left.
The Celtic Trinity Knot was not always know as the "Trinity Knot". It was known and still is reffered to as the Celtic Triquettra.
As with many Celtic knot designs, the meanings changed or evolved into something else when the Celts were introduced to Christianity.
So with the introduction to Christianity the Triquettra became to be known as the Trinity Knot because each of the three points naturally represented the Holy Trinity.
This common and simple design to the left is used by many Churches to represent the Holy Trinity and used as a type of a logo representing their Church.
The next two pictures show another ornate style of the Celtic or Christian Trinity Knot. Each includes a circle with the design. Many have determined the circle is the symbol of eternity and therefore an nice addition to this Holy Trinity symbol.

We have all these Trinity Knot Pendants for sale at Celtic Trinity Knot Jewellery
